Arizona Senior Olympics Wrap-Up

Thanks to the crack WMRC Volunteer Team of Bill and Ann Peschka, Ric and Sue Surber, Dave Lehnen, Robin Roberts, Mike Parrish, Eddie McKee, Sid Ogino, Bill and Cheryl Heob, Chuck Higgins, Brother Christophe and Brother-in-Law Kit, WMRC once again showed their volunteer spirit over the weekend as they presented the Arizona Bicycle Senior Olympics.

The Senior Olympians really appreciate the opportunity to compete and WMRC was a part of that opportunity.

The Senior Olympians race just as hard as the USCF crowd and tend to be a bit more appreciative!!!

The only hiccup was the chip timer slept in on Sunday and showed up 20 minutes late!!

Ann Peschka and her five-star registration team made up ground, Robin Roberts got the print-outs he needed and we finished ahead of schedule!!

If you were not able to volunteer this year, I encourage you to give it some thought next year.

We once again showed why WMRC is the best!!!

Cheers!!

Thomas Jondall

Hello,

My name is Thomas Jondall, I’m 18 years old and I race for Landis/Trek White Mountain Road Club. I’ve recently been selected to race in Europe with the US Junior National Team. The team will be racing some Kermesses in Belgium and then go to Italy for the Giro della Lunigiana UCI 2.1 and Giro di Basilicata UCI 2.1. It has been an exciting year for me and I’m looking forward to this new challenge.

After a lot of racing in AZ this spring I took part in the USA Cycling Regional Camp in Flagstaff AZ.  I had a very good camp and in the end I was the #1 rider. Because of this result and a 3rd place at the U.S Junior National Time Trial Championship, I was selected to race with the U.S National team in the six-stage Tour de l’Abitibi in Canada. There I was able to help my teammate pick up the best young rider and sprint jerseys. Along with helping him I was the highest-placed rider for the US team in the overall classification in 6th place. Based on my teamwork and result at the Tour de l’Abitibi was invited on this European project.

This project will cost around $2.000 including airfare and incidentals. WMRC has helped me set up a PayPal account for donations at

Thomas Jondall

WMRC will also cover the PayPal fees to enable the full donation to go to me.

Thank you very much and I appreciate any support.

Sincerely,

Thomas Jondall

Thank you for supporting America’s developing cyclists!

WMRC Sponsors and Friends,

My apologies for the lack of communication these past few weeks WIFI has been scarce.  I did my first race the second day i got to Belgium in Kemmel where i flatted out about half way into the race, i finished the second one and got 11th in the last one. The style of racing in Belgium is fast and punchy, they take the corners really slow and accelerate fast out of them. Then we drove down to Italy and did our first stage race where i ended up like 109th overall, I started the race with a cold so i was in survival mode from day one. That particular stage race was about the same speed as a pro NRC in the states just a little bit shorter. Since then we drove to Lucca to stay at the SRM house we leave again tomorrow for the next stage race Giro di basilicata. I will keep you all posted on how i end up.

Thanks,

Thomas Jondall

Scottsdale Cycling Festival – Criterium 10/2/2010

A group of people riding bicycles.

Scottsdale Cycling Festival - Criterium 10/2/2010The idea to add a day of criterium racing to the north Scottsdale cycling scene came from Brian Lemke, a Cave Creek resident who rides with the Landis Cyclery-Trek team. Lemke saw a gap between the Tour de Scottsdale’s Thursday night party and Sunday ride and came to organizers with his plan.

The criterium will be held on Saturday, October 2nd.

More than two thousand cyclists from around the Valley and around the nation are expected at the Scottsdale Cycling Festival this fall. For the first time, the popular 7th Annual 70-mile Tour de Scottsdale citizen’s race that benefits the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy will be paired with a Criterium, adding an exciting competitive element for cyclists and spectators alike.

Register online at RacePlaceEvents.com. Online registration closes on Wednesday Sept. 29 at 11:59 p.m. (PST). Citizen cyclists must obtain one-day, $10 license.  Late Registration is available at 7 a.m. on Saturday at the Expo; a $10 Late Fee applies to all entries received on or after Oct. 1.

ADOT Bicycle Safety Action Plan: Public Input Survey Available

The Arizona Department of Transportation is developing a Bicycle Safety Action Plan to reduce the number of bicycle-related crashes, injuries, and fatalities on state highways.

One of the most important steps toward creating the Bicycle Safety Action Plan is to document the perspectives, concerns, and input, as it relates to bicycle safety, of residents from throughout the State of Arizona.

All residents of Arizona are invited to participate and complete a Public Input Survey for bicycle safety.  The results of the survey will serve as input to identifying important bicycle safety issues and will help to establish goals and objectives for the Bicycle Safety Action Plan.

A link to the survey can be found on the Arizona Department of Transportation’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Program website (http://www.azbikeped.org/).  The results of the on-line survey are collected automatically so respondents do not have to email or print the completed survey.

For assistance completing the survey or for more information on the Bicycle Safety Action Plan, please contact:

THE COURSE: A 39-mile total out and back course with 11 miles of really difficult climbing. There are lots of rollers and steep winding descents, very few flat areas, and most important, very few cars (usually less than 10 total). There is beautiful, smooth pavement, and gorgeous scenery. Vertical gain is 3500’.

2010 Tortilla Flats Road Race Series

THE RULES: All USCF rules apply. There is only one intersection at a distance of ¾ mile from the start. The groups will roll neutral to the intersection at highway 88 and turn right. The race can then go its own pace until it reaches the first one-way bridge. Entering the bridge with cars coming the opposite way is an automatic disqualification from the race. The same rules apply when you cross the next bridge before the climb to Tortilla Flats. Turn around at the “end of pavement” sign, just past the mile marker 220. If you are dropped long before the turn around, you can turn and jump in with the group as they pass you on the descent. If you choose this method you are ineligible to contest or help in the sprint. When you start the 5-mile descent there are 2 steep 90-degree left turns where you must use your brakes, or you will go over the side of the mountain into the cholla. When the groups finish they must yield to cars before turning left onto Nodak Rd. at mile 200. There is still a ¾ mile uphill to the finish line so there is no reason to attack into the left turn. Any time after the turn onto Nodak is okay. Finish line is at the Mining Camp Restaurant.

THE DIRECTIONS: Highway US 60 east or Brown Road east to Highway 88 east. Follow the highway toward Canyon Lake, but turn right on Nodak just before mile 200. Follow signs to the Mining Camp Restaurant at the base of the Superstition Mountain. Don’t park in front of the big tree. It is reserved for registration. Please click here to view a detailed map for parking, registration, etc

THE PRIZES: $5 of each entry goes to the weekly cash prize for the top 3 places of each race. Cash will be paid 5 deep with 15 or more per field. Points series for each category: 5 for 1st, 1 for 5th. $ awards to top three in each series. “A” series: $50, $25, $15. “B” series: $30, $20, $10. Scoring will be based on 9 best results. Tie breaker to be total # of 1st places, then 2nd places, etc.

THE DETAILS: $10 entry for all riders per week, or $95 for the whole series of 11 races. If field size warrants, A and B races will start separately. The whole race will take about 2 hours. Bring 3 water bottles and spare inner tube, patch kit and pump. There is no follow vehicle, unless you supply one. USCF license required, 1-day license available to new racers. Helmets required. No aero-bars. Jersey must have sleeves. Keep your race number and pins for each week that you race of the series.

We are guests in the neighborhood. Please respect residents by assuring you are not blocking residential traffic (stay to the side of the road when warming up and staging). Do not congregate in such a way to impede any motor vehicles. Thank you for your consideration. We have been running this event for 10 years and do not want to give anyone any reason to complain and then have to shut it down. Please remember to leave the neighborhood in the same condition as before you arrived.

QUESTIONS:  Call Dave Reid (480)-497-8832 evenings until 8pm or email [email protected].  See you there.

A Look Back – February 2000

Here is an article from our February 2000 Newsletter

I just finished reading Irma Sandercock’s “Decade in Review” in the White Mountain newsletter, and it was great. It is always great to look back and remember where one has been. Time goes by so fast …My purpose in writing this is to maybe “fill in some gaps” in a little White Mountain history. I thought it would be interesting for some to see what events led into the 90’s history, in particular the Valley of the Sun Stage Race and Gregg Duckett’s Toyota sponsorship. First the Toyota story … I met Gregg on the M.S. “Breakaway to the Border” in 1986. I was on a small team called Silver Spoke Cycling Team, which had about 20 riders. With a little persuasion Gregg and his 1st generation Bell helmet (the original) joined us. He mentioned he worked for Scott Toyota and that he might be able to get some money from them for the team, since we had no sponsorship. After intense negotiations he was able to get $500. From my perspective at that time, it might, as well been $500,000! This meant we would have a real sponsor on our jerseys, just like the pros. The next year the amount went up a little, but the team had dwindled down to only 10 racers. This team had also been putting on the Safford RR, TT, and Mt. Graham hill climb (3 races back then). At the end of 1989 we decided to “merge” with another team.

Which leads to the stage race beginnings Because most of us lived in the East Valley, and White Mountain Road Club had a nice group of “old” guys (just kidding), plus they also used to have this huge (up to 30 riders !) Sunday training ride, what was left of Silver Spoke decided to join. There was one catch though … Silver Spoke had already committed to do the Safford races on the next year race calendar. We explained our dilemma to then President Rod Pitts, and he agreed that WMRC could do the races (They were already doing Wupatki and Misery Loves Co. TT), as long as one of us would be the race director. So the 5 of us including US National Jr. TT champion Casey Fabig (The Casey of what is now “Casey’s Classics Bike Shop”) and Gregg’s Scott Toyota sponsorship (minus the helmet) merged. The race director job fell on me. I think I worked harder doing the Safford races that year, than the 3 years I did the Valley of the Sun Stage Race combined. The team supported it as well as could have been expected, but the race lost about $700. Just a month earlier the team lost about $500 putting on Wupatki. So … it was decided that the next race season (1991) WMRC would do something simpler and closer to home. Something like two separate races — a criterium and maybe a time trial. Dave Bauman found a criterium course at Baseline and Mesa Drive in a soon to be developed business park. Ellen Reid and Susan Arnold suggested having a TT in Casa Grande. That year we did both. We broke about even. I served as race director for both of the races, but Dave and I felt we needed to do something more, maybe start a new tradition, and also to attract racers from out of state. A stage race seemed like the logical choice. So in 1992 the VOS race was born.

We already had the Crit site. We needed a TT and RR location. Dave found a great TT course in Lehi. A little short, but lots of turns and a short hill. We decided to locate the races in the Mesa area, so we went with the proven Usery Pass RR course, which was always the first race of the season, although we moved the finish to the uphill section. Dave did all the race organization, including the more difficult than it seems, job of primes and prizes. I handled the permits, phone calls (before Web sites!) and a WMRC first — free racer housing. The races (scored on points then) went well, and we made money finally!!
John Fritz
